You didn't.  One person stepped in and that was that.

Hej Richard, we had that before, with all my respect to You, if You don't have anything clever to say, don't say nothing.
[/quote]

He was being clever and in fact he was being quite perceptive. He was pointing out that the guy who was apologising had nothing to apologise for that's all.

I think you will find that 'dont say nothing' is, in fact, a double negative, so what you've actually said, translated into correct English is," Richard, if you don't have anything clever to say then say something". I rather suspect that that is not actually what you meant. Who's clever now?

As said said earlier  - time to lighten up all round  :)

7. The function and consumption standard of engine oil
The engine oil is one of the most important operating fluids in a combustion engine. The principal functions of the engine oil are: lubrication, cooling and prevention of corrosion and sediment. It is a technical necessity that every combustion engine consumes engine oil. For this reason, engines with a high-speed concept tend to have higher engine oil consumption than other BMW engines. The level of the engine oil consumptions is greatly influenced by driving style and by the fuel used. For BMW spark-ignition and diesel engines, the maximum permissible engine oil consumption is 0.7 l/1000 km. Because of their increased power output and torque, M engines have a maximum permissible oil consumption of 1.5 l/1000 km. Oil consumption up to above specification according with technical standard, belongs to normal range. The oil indicator/warning light is a feature from BMW to remind the driver to check and refill the oil. It does not indicate any fault or defect. Please contact your nearest authorized BMW dealer in such a case

For all those who are burning oil, at the rates quoted in this thread, please switch to Castrol R.

The country would smell lovely.

And I've had 3 e53's amongst a number of other BMW's. 1 x 4.6 and 2 x 3.0D and not one of them has used any oil between services. In fact, the last car I had that used oil at anywhere near the rates quoted was a split windscreen Morris Minor and when I pulled the engine apart it was the valve stem oil seals that were FUBAR'd; oh, and the rings, and the bores and pretty much everything else. Good fun learning about the internal combustion engine though.

Well if we want to get into grammatical structure and proofreading, then I'm happy to advise that changing dont say nothing to dont say anything is more in keeping with the original text and script rather than do not say anything, although there would be nothing wrong, from a technical perspective, of using the phrase 'don not say'
However, we're not here to discuss linguistics (I will happily point those who wish to other more suitable forums)
I did also sign off with the fact that everyone should lighten up

The underlying trend of the thread is that statistically speaking, whilst we have a small sample group, there are fewer examples of low consumption and a greater number (from those who have posted) of a higher level of consumption.
The sample size is not large enough to draw a statistical conclusion on what is 'the norm' however, given that a) oil consumption does depend on driving style and conditions, amongst other things, and given that b) there are fewer folk here with lower end consumption than those with higher end consumption, it is not reasonable to suggest all the higher end consumption drivers must be driving around with blown seals.

It's time to come down on planet earth...did they tell you about vvt isues? lifters issues? oil pump valves dropping in oil pan? gearbox, transfer box, diff lifetime oil? valve seals? water pipe leaking? No, why?
Its bmw. that's what they do...to make you believe you driving out off this world car,  to make you believe 1l/600miles is normal in normal driving conditions...are we in Germany or Uk? Bad roads, slow motorways, speed cameras...are there any other then normal driving conditions? As a mechanic who did few n62,n46,n42 engines:
Normal is 1l/8-10.000miles for this engine. that's the end off it. If all off you don't believe it, it's  time to come down on earth...Thank you

I had an M3 which used bugger all oil, as in not noticeable come service time.  They use these figures as a get out of jail card I feel.
