A couple of questions...
A couple of questions...
Hello all, I have a couple of (probably daft) questions about my F15, many thanks in advance for any advice.
1. Yesterday I drove about ten miles, 90% of which was motorway doing around 85 mph. When I turned the car off, the fan stayed on for quite a few minutes...it's done this a few times and I'm not sure why? Anything to do with having the AC running? The outside temperature according to the car was around 11°C, and car had been sitting in the drive overnight before my journey.
2. Almost all of the time when I turn the car off and get out, there is a noise comes from underside which sounds like when you drive over really loose gravel and some of it pings up and hits the car. Or, imagine you had a sheet of metal and were throwing tiny little stones at it very quickly. Lasts a minute or two. Never happened on other cars I've owned (or maybe it did and I didn't notice)?
3. Getting my iPhone 6 this week - anyone had issues pairing it to an F15?
Many thanks all...
Scott

Re: A couple of questions...
1. Sounds like the DPF regen cycle is running. The exhaust gets VERY hot and so the fans run to stop everything cooking or catching fire! Standard on our cars if fitted with a DPF.
2. Could just be the underbody shields cooling down?

Re: A couple of questions...
I have an iPhone 6 plus with ios8.1. No issues with pairing. Bt streaming, text all work fine.
Re: A couple of questions...
Out of interest, how do you get texts and emails to display ? I have the connected apps and Bluetooth streaming etc but never seen text messages as an option.

This must be an M50d thing *high five* (I never heard the 30d do it. Ever.) - When I turn the engine off, it sometimes sounds as if its ready for take off. Its only happened a few times, but each time it does it, I think it stays on for circa 10 mins or so? - I would have personally thought it was the secondary coolant system trying to cool down the primary coolant system - or something along those lines (all M50d vehicles have dual coolant systems, similar to the M5!), but as X5Sport said, could very plausibly be the DPF regen cycle.

This has happened to me many times over a few cars i've owned and/or driven! The worst was our work's Nissan Navara... After stopping the car's engine after a good drive, It would give a few 'ping' noises and then a few minutes later, there would be one big metal thud - you'd almost think the exhaust had fallen off! I'm pretty sure its to do with the hot bits of the car cooling down and shrinking slightly into each other (hot metal expands).

Once paired up and connected to the car, go to the settings menu in your iphone, and click on bluetooth. You should see a list of devices that your handset is paired to, so click on the little arrow on the one that says BMW[last 5 digits of VIN] and there should be an option on that screen that has words to the effect of "display notifications". If you select that option (probably tick marks it), then it should start pushing texts to your iDrive screen. Unfortunately I don't have an iPhone anymore, otherwise I could have given you more specific information with screenshots.
One thing to bear in mind though is that it only pushes new text messages to your iDrive. It won't download old messages that you read before getting into the car. Once you turn off the car, those messages are lost in the idrive and only kept on your phone. This is different to android (depending on which android you have - I only have experience with my Xperia Z2) whereby it seems to download all the text messages that you've received - engine off or engine on - for a considerable while back. It also does the same with emails.
I personally could never get emails to work either, but there may be a knack to doing that.
Sunny.

Cheers Sunny. I feel reassured now after these few replies. I did think it would have been something like that...those 8 years at uni weren't entirely wasted lol

Re: A couple of questions...
Thanks Sunny.
I almost always run the iDrive in split screen so keep forgetting that the other options are only available in single screen mode.

I did a Ph.D. In Fluid Dynamics after scoring a first in Civil Engineering...then I sold my soul to the oil industry. What line of work are you in?

Re: A couple of questions...
I work in a company that deals with supplying metallic automotive components to OE systems manufacturers that are typically forged, cast and machined. My role isn't very technical to be fair, but puts bread on the table, butter in the fridge and 3 turbos on the drive
Oh fluids!? Nice. I had a fair bit of interest in fluids, I did my 3rd year project (main one) on Underwater Vortex Rings (this is the point where we lose everybody else I think...). I didn't really find anything new (but as 3rd years, I don't suppose we were really expected to) but I did pretty well- to the extent that I was actually invited to a fluids phd! But unfortunately, I turned it down vs. a job because of money (booo, I know lol). I was also scared that I might not be able to cope with it, if I'm honest.
I don't know what it was about fluids, but it just instantly made sense to me- more so than mechanics, materials, systems analysis, and other parts of engineering.
