Thats not correct - The 4.8 definitely uses oil and its perfectly normal. Nothing wrong with my valve seals either.

Every BMW I have owned, and all from new used oil from Day 1. BMW even have a spec for how much. My seals were (and are) fine.

All modern engines use oil due to the breather systems employed on then for emissions purposes. How much is too much all depends on driving style and mileage covered. My previous works LR disco 4 used 1.5L every 10k. Honda type-R models can use up to 1L every 1000 miles and Honda say that's normal for those engines. If you've got no leaks and your happy the breather system on your X is working ok then don't worry.
You'd know if valve stem seals or rings when at fault. It would smoke like a good 'un.

As per Rich, my 4.8is isn't set mileage and for someone who works with these vehicles and frequently posts about such would know that wouldn't they?

Who with the right mind will look what bmw cbs says? Its same about bmw lifetime oils... Have you ever seen one? 10k its maks for any car, any engine. I will tell that again, n62 does not use oil. 1l/10.000 its normal. Mine with new valve seals does not need any top ups between service. Any. B4 I get the job done it was 1l/700 miles. Thats the real world, real owner but what do i know...

Well, I will "tell that again" that Its perfectly normal for performance engines to use some oil - the 4.8is being one of them. I am quite happy that it is entirely normal. And that there is no problem with the valve seals. Each to their own.

Performance engine? Please... Its standard engine used in 5er,7er,x5. Nothing special about it. E70 4.8i its not performance car and its using same engine. If you happy about oil consumption its fine but don't tell me it's normal cause it's not. I did few n62,n42,n46 so i know what oil usage is...

My 2004 3.0 diesel 218 often does a lot of hard work... and in 6 months its only used a litre of oil over 9,ooo miles since the last service, with 138k on the clock, and regularly does some hard runs...
Looking at the oil consumptions you guys are going thru with a little surprise... wondering is there is an oil separator for the crank vent to the Inlet manifold that could be gummed up to cause this amount of oil consumption ?
Maybe some thing I have to look out for ?
And also wondering if the 3 hrs a day at 80mph keep the tubing cleaner ?

Yes there is.
There is a how to change it on here. You likely have a vortex one for that year and ought to consider fitting a vortex one unless you know a previous owner fitted one. A blocked one is a known cause of turbo failure.

You would know if it was the stem seals worn only when starting first thing in a morning or been stood for a few hours, there will be a fair bit of smokes....firstly blue and then black...then it will clear.
Blocked breathers etc will show up when you put your foot down.....lots of smoke for the first few seconds and then it will clear.
worn rings....smoke will be blue when accelerating from anywhere

Thats not the case with valvetronic engines. First, it will start burning oil, 1l/600-700 miles. After that it will get worse. Leave it on idlle for 10-15mins, drive off and you will see blue smoke.

Mine gives a puff of white smoke on first startup but hardly visible in warm weather im thinking its glow plugs or relay
