Oil consumption

Post by kamb » Mon Oct 20, 2014 10:46 am

I have covered approx 5000miles since last oil change upon checking dipstick level today it was on minimum level

I know they burn oil more than other cars but is this normal?

No oil leaks seen only bit of smoke at start up which everyone says is normal check other posts

Which variant do you have again?

My 4.8 gets through oil but it is normal.

BMW dealer recently advised me that adding 1l oil every 600 miles is normal - I have a 4.8 though, they do use oil.

That sounds normal for the 3.0d.  Well within the BMW spec.  These engines do use a bit, and mine (218bhp variant) certainly did.

My 06 3:0d used 1ltr of oil after covering 1650 miles on holiday touring with a 6 birth caravan ,  I was abit concerned also but after reading up on the forum it seems quite normal.

Sounds about right

Good job I stocked up on oil whilst it was cheap at eurocarparts few months back

Might be worth checking if it wasn't just a typo before going off on one as per normal.

I think you're wrong - I would say its reasonably normal. Most folk don't bother to check oil levels these days and simply expect it to last between services. Also depends on your style of driving of course

It's not normal for n62. I've noticed some of You on this forum don't have a clue about engines, yet they claiming, I'm wrong >:( .You dont have to top oil up between services.

Tbh I think it's wrong to say that you should never need to top up oil between services. Every engine will burn some oil so I can't see how it can go 15k miles for example without topping up. I agree every 600 miles is excessive though hence thinking it was a typo possibly.

What kind of driver is changing oil every 15k? 10k is max. 1l per 10k is normal.

Those with Condition Based Servicing.......up to 20k!  I've had several cars, and not just BMWs, with CBS and the change interval varied with driving style.  Only if the WRONG oil was used did it drop to 10k intervals.
