Car shuddering from the front whilst cornering and accelerating at the same time

Post by scoomby » Mon Oct 13, 2014 8:05 pm

Hi.

I've been having an issue with my X5 for the last 6 months.  It's just inside it's warranty and it is currently at the dealer (second time around now) to try and correct this issue and they still haven't found the cause.  I have looked through the problems reported on this site and I cannot find anyone reporting a similar issue on this vehicle.

At the moment, the car is shuddering when accelerating and cornering at the same time.  It usually occurs when parking and can be sometimes felt when going around a roundabout as well.  The shuddering can be felt through the floor and through the steering wheel.  It is usually worse when the car has been warmed up and this issue has been getting much worse over the last 6 months.  The other thing that I have just noticed is that we fitted 2 new front tyres just under 4 months ago and we are already down to 4mm tread depth.  This is after covering just 3,000 miles.  This is excessive wear for sure.

So far the dealer has replaced the front drive shaft although this only improved it slightly.  This was done on the last visit.  Tomorrow they are about to replace the front drop links as there is a little bit of play although I am not convinced that this will correct the issue.

Has anyone had a similar issue?

Thanks

Steve

Hi Steve

My internet diagnosis is either wheel bearing or CV joint.

Wheel bearings can be pretty easily diagnosed by driving alongside a brick or concrete wall with the window down and letting the car coast in neutral - if you hear a 'tick tick tick' sound, it's a surefire way to diagnose. To figure out which side it is, swerve the car. The offending corner should go silent when it's put under load.

But given yours is doing it under power and especially when cornering, I'd say it could be CV joint. Try doing some low speed full lock turns. Then try accelerating in the turn. With the joint at full articulation, if it's sick it will let you know about it.

Hi Smokey
I'll mention that possibility to the garage.
Thanks

Ide say the front tyre wear is a pointer to something wrong...
It seems excessive..
So either the geo is out.
OR,,, and I may get shot down in flames for this, but maybe the transfer box is playing up and the front wheels are doing most of the work...Just a suggestion.....
