I've gone for the HTC DESIRE HD phone and its fantastic! Pairs up with the X5 and the phonebook appears on the screen in a matter of seconds!
Dont know how to check if SMS works on it though!
Many thanks to everyone who helped me along the Bluetooth saga!!
Merry christmas to you all!

Not sure if the sms stuff works, I haven't got the hang of texting while I'm driving.
I think I need a bit more practice steering with my knees!
Well get someone to send you a text, keep it on the phone, and then when you are next in the car with the phone paired up, check and see if the SMS is accessible via the screen. Sometimes SMS functionality is limited, so don't be too bothered if its not there, just be happy with the address book!!!
Not bothered at all about the SMS to be honest, i've got the phonebook working and it makes and receives calls, that for me is fantastic! I was starting to thinki didnt have the bluetooth facility! A big bonus!

Re: Phone upgrade, what have you got?
I had a Nokia 6310i which did SMS with the E53. Although it's nice to be able to read text messages its' simply not practical to send messages from the car. So, in all honesty, I dont think not having SMS is a big negative. It's not an option on the new cars either! Make calls, recieve calls and use the phone's addressbook: these are the big plus points in my humble opinion.

If the actual phone is just as important as the ability to pair to the X then I can highly recommend the HTC desire hd as it is a fantastic piece of kit, only let down by its poor battery.

I would totaly agree mate, its such a great phone! When i first sent a text on it i hated the Predictive text and thought it was more of a nuisance than anything else! Now I have managed to switch it off, its just great ,so easy! As for pairing with the X its fantastic!
