Winter Tyres & Rims
Re: Winter Tyres & Rims
Just checked ny oem sizes with that tyre size calculator link and they were saying 0.2% difference in circumference and saying 4.8mm diference in circumference.
Don't know how much difference it makes but the e53's are all wheel drive not permanent(i think more goes to the rears) i'm not sure on the e70's mind as haven't had one yet

Re: Winter Tyres & Rims
Should that not be a 315/35 R20 to avoid the circumference change?
Given the difference in rolling diamater is there a risk of shattering the 4wd drive system due to the rotation speed differences between front and rear axles? No idea how big an issue this is as I don't know how the X-drive sorts out the possible torsional load variations across the 4WD system.

Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.

only mm's in it.
Re: Winter Tyres & Rims
A few people over in the States are using the 295/40/20 without issues. As correctly pointed out it does put the speedo out by 2% (an acceptable limit in most conversion guides), but given 315/35/20 are difficult to get hold of, it is just one of the possible options.
Whatever you do don't go for 295/45/20 as that will give you a 5% increase in speed relative to speedo and 295/35/20 will put the speedo out massively too.
There is pretty much only one winter tyre for 315/35/20... by Pirelli, called the Ice & Snow Scorpion Runflat winter tyre - about £450 each.
In the 295/40/20 size, there's more to choose from, and at lower cost too.
Pirelli Ice & Snow Scorpion (non-RFT) - £285 approx
Goodyear UltraGrip - £290 approx
Dunlop SP Winter Sport M3 - £290 approx
Continental ContiCrossContact Winter - £295 approx
There's also an alternative size of 305/35/20 but availability is limited to the Pirelli W240 Sottozero, which is mega expensive at about £450 each

Re: Winter Tyres & Rims
Guys, am I right in understanding that as long as the load rating is the same it should not matter if they are run flats or not, as I am considering not getting the run flats to assess the difference in ride quality?
Also would coming off the run flats have any implications for the warranty or insurance?

Re: Winter Tyres & Rims
With the snow thick on the ground up here in scotland (worst I've seen since a sprog) the x is coping reasonably well - i'm on 20" and thinking about the BMW offer, local deal has this :
http://www.easternbmw.co.uk/parts/own.html?id=8310
Scroll down to the X5 section, wondering what would be best setup as mine is the 4.0d M Sport - thinking 18"s would be best all round but may not look right with the msport setup and thus 19's are way to go, thoughts ?
Aside from the other suggestions of sourcing the rubber at 265 per corner = £1060 + rims + fitting the BMW offer can't be that far off a DIY approach ?

Re: Winter Tyres & Rims
Working in Telford at present, the main roads are fine but I had to travel about 300 yds down a country lane to the hotel.....not easy on 20" rims with low profiles.

Mate, that is a given, they are not gonna get around to it themselves. At least they feed and water us.
Mine will hopefully arrive by the weekend or early next week and knowing my luck the rest of the winter will be a mild one.......

Re: Winter Tyres & Rims
Ok so seeing as the conditions aren't getting any better up here I've been back to the search for winters; coming up blank and then found this :
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... _511wt_907
Any thoughts on these ?
Will they fit the M-Sport ?
Also Been bidding on E70 alloys on fleacebay - just missed out on a full set of 213's (19s) which went for £361; though now going to ditch this approach as can't get Winter tyres from Blackcircles, mytyres or any other of the usual sources !!
Help and advice on above link appreciated !

Blackcircles are good but when I enquired they did not have any run flats in stock at the required sizes, this may have changed. If you have an alternative to mytres.co.uk I would use it (check my post in the forum discussion section under mytyres.co.uk) probably the worst customer service ever and rubbish to deal with.

Re: Winter Tyres & Rims
I am looking at putting the following on my e70 for the winter months.......currently on 20's with 315 at the back and I think 285 at the front.....looking at buying a complete set of 18's with Bridgestone Blizzak's on.....
Was wondering as I am running a 20 shod sport whether or not there would be any problem putting 18's on with the same size all the way round

Re: Winter Tyres & Rims
I come from the same staggered setup : 275/40R20 & 315/35R20 and am now running on 4 255/55R19 as recommended by BMW.
It does look a bit odd on the rear where it is a bit empty compared to the 315 ... but otherwise it is a perfect combo ...
I have heard from people putting spacers in place for the looks ... but then again you loose all warranty etc ...
