Violet the 4.8 instrument cluster has Alpina type lights which go off as the car warms up, they are round the edge of the dial. Do you want a photo? They are quite distinctive as opposed to the others - it was more or less the only "nod" to the Alpina origins of the 4.8is engine that BMW gave.

Yes please to the pics been struggling to spot the difference.  Presume the 4.6 cluster is slightly different?

The 4.6 cluster certainly looks the same, Alpina with oil temp instead of fuel consumption, and lights on the rev counter giving a moving rev limit as it warms up. There are a few 4.6 clusters on ebay going for about £150.

4.6/4.8 Cluster - grey background and LEDS in the Rev counter.
Image

3.0i Cluster (this one is km/h) - may not have silver gauge rings depending upon year.  No LEDs!
Image

3.0D cluster (in test mode) - much lower Rev range is the giveaway and the fuel gauge has 'Diesel' in it.

There is something odd then.  My dash has the  rev lights.  So it cannot be a diesel one.  BMW probably gave my garage wrong info.  Garage read iy off the back and gave bmw the part no.  But no way can it be diesel.

The garage are loaning me a old 4.4 one so gives me a bit more time to shop around.  BMW. Want £811 plus £166 SURCHARGE which I may or may not get back on exchange.  Plus vat.  Rather not fork out all that so going to shop around for a couple of weeks.  Will go 4.6 is cannot get a 4.8.  If anyone spots one please PM me.

Cannot recommend my garage highly enough.  London Road garage in coalville.

Search for 'BMW X5 4.6is instrument' on ebay brings up several of varying conditions, some in Lithuania, most in UK.
If your cluster is the correct one after all, couldn't you use one of the cluster repair companies to get it up and running again, there's one listed against the same search for £135.
I've just had my Father In Law's ABS module repaired by BBA Remanufacturing in Kent. Price included postage both ways, and did an excellent job, I'm pretty sure they do BMW clusters.

Had thought about a fix.  But there is a lot wrong with it.  It has been messed around with  so might go for one off eBay.  Then get it coded and mileage sorted. I would love a new one and will go down that route later.  Want new wheels and a full service done.

Maybe it is the wrong cluster but has had a front face panel fitted to it as a kind of bodge - have heard of this happening before. Genuine reasons can sometimes be to make imports legal with miles instead of just km displayed on the face, but it may have been a bit of a bodge when the original cluster became faulty.
I can only think that the seller must have known about this and wanted rid of the money pit, very disingenuous of course.

There are a few specialist BMW breakers around, maybe worth trying them - there is one near Nottingham, I am sure someone will come on with some names, just can't remember them.  There were never loads and loads of 4.8is models around though, so it might take a bit of patience or a 4.6is cluster.  The BMW prices are crazy, definitely not worth it once you factor in all the work and recoding plus the £1000-ish for the cluster, although if you have the money and the car is a keeper then that may be your choice.    Many of the parts for this car seem to be around the £1000 mark or more from the main dealers!

It's just the picture colour but it certainly looks like the original but just its had it.

The clocks are taken from the ///M parts bin. They are distinctive and were used to give the M feel and look as the original plan was it was to be the original X5M.
