Hi All,
Just getting to grips with the X5 I bought recently. I went on a horror 6-7hr round trip journey today where I covered just 40 miles in the snow!! The roads were covered in snow and ice, but where the cars were failing the X5 was battling on.
I have a few questions and wanted to know whether anyone on here can help me:-
1) I have noticed a constant drone/whirring type noise coming from the rear, which is especially evident at speeds over 30mph when i let go of the accelerater and coast towards a stand still. I had the rear wheel bearings checked today and the garage said they seemed ok. They said this could be the rear diff but need to take of the casing etc to have a proper look. Anyone here experienced anything similar?
2) One other thing I am getting is a loud thud/bang type noise from my rear when going over speed humps and also ditches in the road. I can replicate this noise by simply banging on the rear floor carpet which suggests it is loose, but it seems to fit spot on? Worried it could be something to do with the suspension or can anyone tell me if X5's also suffered from rear subframes cracking like the E46 bmw's?
3) Lastly a very simple one. Can anyone recommend someone in London that does a Oil Service at a reasonable price, possibly with the oil breather replacement done at the same time?
Big thanks in advance for the replies. Am loving the X5 so far, and just want to get any issues sorted so I can enjoy the car.

Drone when coasting?
Re: Drone when coasting?
Hi mate
Can't help you with number one, but I'm sure someone else will be along shortly.
Number two sounds like your rear bushes, how many miles has your X covered?
Number three is the easy one........ Jason BW in Hounslow. He is a member on this forum and can do most things from remaps to servicing, even rear bushes
Hope this helps.

Drone when coasting?
Tyre noise??? Balancing?? Cupped tyres??? Rotation wrong way??? Flat spots??? I'm out, lol, rear sub frame bushes sound like the clunking culprit, does it do it when you slam the brakes on also??
Re: Drone when coasting?
Number 1. i'm not sure ...wheel balancing maybe..you could have lost a weight with all this shit@y weather around.
number 2. could be subframe bushes depending on age/wear of car expensive to repair at dealers but can be done diy with limited skills/knowledge and there is amember on here that has the tool for the job if needed (Lezmtaylor)
number 3. i don't know your where abouts but Jason (forum member) from bmw chiptune provides a good service and fair prices ...plenty of folks on here used him and very happy. He is based in hounslow, middlesex, west london.

EDIT: Just about to submit this post and got the message saying that paulmb had already posted ....must work on my speed typing .......similar answers aswell

Re: Drone when coasting?
In the time it took to check this post, put my daughter to be and then jump on board again with the full intention of posting - ask x555 as it is bushes that require the special tool, he goes and posts.
Even better that BL02WAS and paulmb have posted similar responses.
Jason is in Hounslow and very competent - many on here have recommended his work. Try phoning him (doesn't work Monday's - lightweight!) 0208 570 3600
Very busy and easily distracted (due to his workload no doubt) - still owes me a phone call to sort my wife's car out! OI JASON!!!! CALL ME TOO!!!!

Re: Drone when coasting?
Thanks for all the help so far guys.
To answer some questions:-
Point 1) I have had a couple of Michellins put onto the rear and balanced yesterday so will check today to see if this has cured the drone problem. Pity it looks like an ice rink outside my house
Point 2) The car has done just over 100k and has had a FBMWSH upto now. The bang never comes when I brake hard but only when I go over speed humps no matter how slowly I go over them. Is there anyway I can visually check the subframe bushes? I checked them yesterday and they looked pretty solid when moving the wheel around whilst the car was jacked up. I am pretty handy, so if I get them diagnosed by someone as needing replacing I will be sure to contact Lezmtaylor to see if I can borrow/hire the tool off him.
Point 3) Excellent I will contact Jason to see what the situation is in terms of bookings. I am based on the other side of London so can anyone tell me what his typical price for an Oil Service is? as it is a fair trek and especially with the weather I know it can take hours to get to the other side!
Thanks again!
