hi I am new to forums someone suggested I give this ago!  I have just bought a x3, i was told it would give good fuel economy,  and was talked into the automatic diesel for even better economy.  However I am struggling to get more than 31 mpg on the motorway, on cruise control sitting at 60mph.  Although books have said 50mpg I would have been happy with top 40's but 31mpg on open road, is concerning me.  Anyone have any suggestions or comparisons as to what they get?

Hi and welcome. It would help if you told us what engine you have 2.0d 3.0d 3.0 sd ?
I would get 32 MPG out of my X5 at 75 MPG.

Late Facelift E83 or new shape F25 from 2011 ?


If unsure does it have  an 8 speed auto ?


Regardless of above make sure oil level and tyre pressures are good. Also maybe give it a a good 1 hr run with some revs - reset then mpg computer then set cruise to 70 on a run and note what the computer says.

Variables on the computer might be wrong so maybe also calculate by brim to brim and maths.

If still not good get it checked over.

For sake of circa £45 - £75 a decent independent can plug in diagnostic kit and run same. That should give an idea re any problems albeit it is not guaranteed to find less obvious issue(s).

If recently bought from a main dealer they may offer to check it over free of charge.

thanks, its a F25 2l 8speed auto. diesel.  The book said 50 + mpg and jeremy clarksons review on Top Gear said that this newer model x3 had great fuel economy.  I have filled it up and reset comp done a trip from Dundee to Aberdeen at 70mph (on cruise control) and I got 34pmg.  I filled up again reset comp and dd Dundee to Glasgow 60mph (on cruise control) and got 31mpg.  And from a basic point of view I am going through fuel fast, half a tank isn't giving what it should

You seem fairly certain it's not a false mpg  data issue. It should return better mpg than that. Either do back run seller or take it to a BMW dealer or BMW Indy/ specialist for diagnostics.

As a general rule of thumb take 25% off the OEM stated figures and you'll get nearer the 'real' world.  It doesn't sound right in your case.

Our Mini Countryman was alleged to do better than 60mpg but we never saw above 42 which is why it went back.  The dealer said it was fine and the fuel consumption was within tolerance!

My X6 is about 20% worse then BMW quote.  I note now that all the brochures say the figures are for the basic spec only and will change dependant upon options & transmission type!!  In other words they can get away with it.  :rant:

I just collected my 20d xdrive today, Jan 13 reg, so I guess December 12 build.
8 speed auto.

I did 160 miles, got caught in heavy stop start traffic for 40 miles on the M25 and then sat at around 80ish for the rest of the journey, well till 20 miles to go and then got bored and wanted to get home.

Up till then I was seeing 50mpg, but this dropped with the last 20 miles of wanting to get home asap and I got back showing 49.1mpg.

First thing I would do is check your thermostats, they start to fail every 4 years or so.

If they fail you car will be overfuelling and your dpf will be getting more and more blocked as it needs to see 90ºc to do a regen.

Search google on how to check the thermostat temperature and report back.

Should get to 90ºc in under 15 minutes, more like 10 minutes, if it doesn't that is your first port of call.
