You could have got a bespoke map too, then no worries about tearing things apart.  Ok a bit more than £70 but less chance of a £2k bill for an overloaded transmission... :)

a valid point...

worthy of note is that there were another 5 settings too boost the power even more than I have selected....
but...
as you wisely mention... I don't want to destroy my beloved X5... compared to a Landy TDi I had once the X5 is sooooo much better - love this car !!!

simple thought though is to buy an Evo if I want Evo performance.

For my money... this 2004 Sport X5 is one of the best cars ive ever owned  .

Ditto - know there's far batter out there now, but my budget will never stretch to that. Best car I've owned too.

Me too, I've got a 2003 3.0D sport, 2 cars back was a 2006 4.4i sport that had all the toys and was pretty much perfect but started getting worried about mpg, averaging about 16-17 mpg, getting around 20-22 mpg from the diesel, wish I'd kept the 4.4 now absolutely gutted, I've got contacts where I can get the car mapped it's only 180 odd hp version but because its old don't really wanna break it !!!!!

Been running my remap for over 5k miles now and pleased with the results. Car has just over 79k on the clock now.
Gearbox still slips and slides between gears, so might look at having it reprogrammed when I take it for flush and fluid change.
Overall average is around 33mpg, but I do a fair few 'motorway' miles- cruise set at about 68mph as I pay for my own fuel, being self-employed ;-(

Re  posts back about lousy MPG from a 190hp Diesel...

Mine is the 218hp on a 2004, not sure if the difference would be very noticeable, however, I dumped the standard air filter in favour of a K&N version, & dumped the two under valence exit rear silencers for a pair of small stainless straight thru units that poke thru  the rear valence... a bolt on remap from Tiger Tuning off ebay for £65 ish, and she easily delivers 550 > 620 miles a tank EVERY TIME, bearing in mind it cruises at approx. 80 for best mpg.

I also did an injector flush with 20% diesel in the tank with some goo in a retro looking half pint green can for £15 too.... the bloody smoke - wow lol...

combined, this lot definitely made a difference, and my old girl is racking 140k now...

that bolt on remap ??? sounds awful and no doubt an el cheapy resistor which will 100% ruin your fuel pump very soon if its a plug in box at that price.  Do the car a favour and have it remapped properly if it is.  Otherwise you will have injector / fuel pump woes.

mmmm re the resistor in a box...
Must admit, I suspected that, so I opened the plug-in remapper when I got it, and looked thoroughly, as an ex electronics engineer...

The device definitely draws power, has a couple of processors & a whole load of micro surface mount components that are energised and functioning, and reacts to it's inputs sequentially as its input signals change, hooked it to a portable scope to be sure and the device reacts to engine load, on / off throttle, enrichment on punching throttle suddenly, rpm etc etc.
I wondered if the board was a fake and was just to look pretty, but it definitely is doing work with all the input signals against rpm, and reacting to load on the engine from the various engine sensors...
So, the conclusion with the plug-in "is" a genuine working device.
The various settings it has, do what is promised.... and has been working well for 6 months so far.

However, I will gladly admit, that you cannot beat a PROPER remap where the computer is in control properly, and will get this done eventually.
It will be interesting to see what difference a proper map has...
Will post the results in a month or so.

sounds like a thorough investigation [emoji106], however if it only sits inline with one sensor, then thats pretty much the only variable it can manipulate, and also the only input it will receive.  But if its going well then maybe I am wrong, but a decent remap should prove far better,  jason at B&W is your man.
