Think you have to remove the mirror back to gain access.

Just had my mirrors in pieces (on going folding issue) and can tell that you that LED/SMD bulbs don't work, you'll need can bus compatible ones as mine powered up but immediately shut off. Its because they fade on and off and are controlled by the lighting module. In answer to your original question use a thin flat plastic trim tool prise at the lower corner of the trim nearest to the window. Once it's loose gently  work along the bottom edge and up the side, then pull the top section away. It uses a 501 capless type bulb and is on a white 2 pin plug. Unclip the connector and twist the bulb holder out of the lense.

Go one weirder than that...
Leave a normal incandescent lamp in one side and a LED in the other and it works ok!!!!

  :o

spooky didn't try that one, must be a current pulling issue. BMW have some crazy ideas when it comes to lighting circuits.

From my measurements it appears (at the mo..) that they are wired in series with each other!!!
Need to test a little more, but is the only way i can explain what i have seen so far!!

on this topic... I popped to BMW over the weekend to buy one and they said it comes with a mirror cover (in prime grey). A bulb or bulb holder/lamp cannot be bought separately... total cost of mirror cover+ bulb )incl. of VAT) is 50.49.

as for mods I've seen some used SMD's (with resistors) or facelift E53 as well as 'projector' lamps with BMW or M logos etc. Not sure re How to's and wiring diagram is applicable but it 'can be done' :).

cheers

Smds with resistors should work. Projectors may need the hole drilling out.
