Have a look at flight or package holiday ski prices for the February HT break!
For a family of 4, that's where driving really makes sense.
Even doing 20ish mpg in a 4.8iS with roofbox, it's about 5 fill-ups (£500ish), £140 eurotunnel and around £40 each way for French tolls (well worth it!). And no baggage restrictions, extra charges for skiis, taxis/trains to airport and all the other costs that add up.
Austrian hotels do have a high season mark-up but nothing like the UK package operators.
The autoroute back to Calais at HT weekend is now basically a long trail of Brit 4x4s (of every type) with families.
