i3

Post by Don Coffey » Sun Sep 14, 2014 10:58 pm

I took the i3 out for a few hours today from the local dealer.  TBH, I was just curious at first but the car really surprised me.  Fast, nimble, roomy and certainly practical enough as a second car/town car.  I could see us having one in the family in the not too distant future.  Might mean the end of the X6 though. The wife does big miles and couldn't justify keeping the X6 over the 520d.

Anyone else tried out the i3?  Would love a shot at the i8, but can't see the dealer giving me one of those for the day, but interestingly, he told me they have sold twenty already.  Looking forward to seeing a few on the road.

Lucky you.  If you need someone to go with you I'm sure I can make myself available.  But if I could afford the i8 I would probably take the i3 for the the short, town journeys.

Even if they insist on giving you the i8 take the i3 as well as I would be interested in your thoughts.

I am trying to get the wife interested in the i3 & trade the X1 great design , would have to have the range extender though .
Our local dealer has the i8 simply stunning but where would you leave it ? I am going to try for a test drive .

I would be happy with the standard car, but wouldn't look to push my luck with the available range, but that said with a little planning I'm sure you can do a longer journey, say 70-80 miles one way as long as you know where you can charge the car before returning.  BMW can add a DC charger (£580) that's compatible with the chargers at service stations and will give you an 80% charge in 30 minutes.

Called in the Dealer yesterday to see the new 2 series a bit dissapointed as it is supposed to become a 7 seater next year , looked more like a Fiesta so wont be ordering one , will have to save for F15 with 7 seats , anyway the i3 was in the showroom , opened the rear doors everything looked great until i noticed it only has 4 seats !  Another car crossed off the list as we have 3 children & they wont do a 5 seater version due to the weight .
They seem to be watering down the BMW Brand so now looking at a Cayenne instead .

Personally I see the 1st generation of electric cars as a second car, so not so important to me to have loads of space, endurance, but given time I'm sure the technology will continue to improve allowing for more practical cars with usefully endurance that doesn't require planning levels equal to a Militray attack just to do a couple of hundred miles.
