new 2001 4.4 various problems

Post by rodg98133 » Thu Sep 11, 2014 8:45 pm

Just picked up my x5 today and there are a few minor problems.

1. The airbag light keeps coming on and when its on none of the buttons on the steering wheel work or the horn but when it goes off again all works fine?

2. The drivers side mirror doesnt fold. It makes alot of noise but doesnt move anywhere. Is this something thats repairable with the kits on ebay?

3. Drivers seat adjusts every way except moving forwards and backwards. Is this a faulty motor or is the something cheap to check first?

4. The dash keeps telling me to check brake/tail/parking lights and that my bootlid is open. None of these are true?

Thats all I have found so far but im sure some more will crop up. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks

Private or Dealer sale?  Take it back!  Get the money back, go buy a better one.  Did you check the car before buying it?

1, 3 & 4: Sounds like major electrical gremlins/shorts/faulty wires.  Could be both expensive and tricky to fix.  It's also an MOT failure 'as is'.

2: Have a search on here for how to fix the mirror issues.

Oh and :hi:

3. I very much doubt it is the motor. Most likely the circuit board that the switches are fixed to has some dry solder joints. You'll need to remove the board from the seats and re-solder all switch connections. I've had this issue myself.

4. Rear light issues are common and are caused by corrosion of the terminals. They will all need to be cleaned.
The tailgate issue is also common and is caused by a faulty microswitch in the upper tailgate latch. Try to source a second hand latch that hopefully does not have the same issue.

Sounds like the clock spring behind the wheel to me for the airbag fault. Rear lights are known for corrosion on the tracks - pull them out (3 nuts I think from memory ) and give them a good clean and finally the boot not shut is an adjustment of the stops in each rain gutter.

Have checked the tail light connections (the black plug that plugs in) abd all perfectly clean.

Have look at the electric seat and something clicks when I try and move forward but nothing happens have taken the connector off and im getting voltage when the button is pressed so im assuming the motor is dud?

I thought maybe the clock spring for the steering wheel problem but hasnt happened since so just going to watch it.

One of you mentioned adjustimg the boot for the boot open warning. How is this done?

Many thanks

It won't be the plug to the lights, it's the actual tracks on the back of the light unit that corrode.

No, on the back of the light. You have to remove it to see the corrosion. 3 x m6 nuts - 10mm socket required.

Clean it up with wire wool or sand paper and make sure the bulb holder terminals are making a good connection to the bulb.

Ref the electric seat, it could be something simple like the runners are jamming. Something as simple as a coin has dropped in the runner.

I've had it before on other cars so maybe worth a look.
