Strange noise on cool down
Strange noise on cool down
Every so often (about once a month maybe) - I park up and go to get something out of the boot, then i hear a funny noise from the engine.
Like a "Baump" noise - imagine a rubber band over a tissue box.
Goes on rhythmically for about 30-60secs, before a whoosh/ hiss noise.
Answers on a postcard...

Re: Strange noise on cool down
Dear Mam and Dad
Arrived eventually.
Weather is not too bad but unfortunately they haven't finished the hotel yet..
Set up in top floor room with tarpaulin above as per a carry on film..
Entertainment in the evenings is a bit lacking but gives good time to think.
Can you please let RJ1986 know that i think it could be contraction of exhaust during cooling and the hiss may be moisture vapourising on some hot internal component possibly the cats??
Anyway must go.
They are concreting the restaurant and we may get some breakfast by this evening...

If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....

Re: Strange noise on cool down
The hiss happens, then the noise stops, like the hiss is the end of it. And the noise is very constant - every couple of seconds. Would that be the case if something was ticking cool?
I'll try and grab a video next time it happens.
Oh yeah- its a 3.0D '07 if that helps anyone in the slightest.

He said the noise came from the engine !
I guess he knows that his X5 is no 911 and that the engine is in the front not in the boot !

That would be the scariest/most awesome thing ever.
The thing that throws me is that it happens sporadically- nothing to suggest the engine is going to explode, nothing on my warning computer (other than get the brake fluid changed you lazy git).
it's also quite loud - noticeable from inside the cabin and outside.
Like i said, i'll have to grab it on video.

Managed to grab a clip before my battery died.

Re: Strange noise on cool down
Can you narrow it down to a particular area?
Re: Strange noise on cool down
Best i can guess is in the main block, near the front side of it.
Re: Strange noise on cool down
Can you do the video again, this time with the bonnet up?
Re: Strange noise on cool down
Will try to - have to wait for it to do it again.

You didn't cross the border from France to the UK did you? It could be an illegal immigrant stuck under your car.
