For me and my wife there is nothing like the sound of a V8 so LPG or not I would go for the 4.4. The 4.4 we owned was on LPG and was great it always gave a smug feeling when filling up a V8 costs 40 odd quid.

Having said that the current X5 is a 4.6 on petrol, it was so cheap to buy. I have owned several V8's so have educated myself to accept 15mpg around town or towing anything above that is a bonus.
A V8 X5 has to be in my opinion one of the best value for money secondhand cars around.

I was in a similar mind when i bought my X5 last year diesel or V8.....

In the end went for the V8 with Prins LPG conversion.

Cant beat the sound of the V8 and £55 of gas does me approx 260 to 290 miles depending on journeys.

Im thinking of selling mine if your looking to go down the V8 path....

Best of luck in wotever you decide to choose.

It sounds great i have a custom rear set up and sounds even better when you want it to,or just nice when being sensible......

I have had little problems with mine rear air suspension, all sorted after fitting 2 new rear sensors.

Door handle problem, common fault new one fitted.....

Its a no brainer for me. Lpg every time. The V8 loves the gas, if you have a sliding floor in the back you can get a 95 litre tank in there. Beautifully smooth, plenty of power and a soundtrack that dreams are made of. Running LPG also means you can de-cat unleashing more power and also giving it more of a crisp rasp.

Mechanically the V8 is pretty much bomb proof.  Like all engines you need to keep any eye out for leaks, but overall very few people mention faults with the engines themselves.

The 4.4 was averaging about 19mpg, that never changed much even towing the Horse Box. In reality a tank of gas would go around 200 miles mixed motoring or 250 on the motorway (traveling at proper motorway speed).
For what its worth the 4.6 is averaging 17.6 mpg

Most systems start on petrol then switch over to LPG when the coolant temperature reaches a certain point. Most systems you can override to start on LPG with a few button presses - My old Range rover you had to press and hold the change over switch - I would start, but needed a lot of cranking if cold. The system on my X (Romano) has a start on gas if hot feature so if Im doing a bit of running around , stop starting, it always goes straight on gas. This may be available on other systems , I had to go into the software via the diagnostics port to switch this on.
