went out last night to take a few pics of the car, noticed the plastic cover on top of the engine was loose
took it off to see how it fastened, and noticed this
now im positive, they were once pipes

Not knowing what the pipes do I can't tell you, but I would expect that if they have vacuum or gas flow then that could upset the engine as the 'system' isn't sealed correctly any longer.
They are part of the crank breather system. It's time for a service on those bad boys. You need to at minimum change the pipes but it's commonly agreed that the Pcv valve on the back of the plenum should be changed and the oil cyclon ether cleaned out or replaced aswell. There are a couple of small diameter pipes at the back that will need doing aswell.
