Which tyres ?

Post by telatech » Sat Aug 16, 2014 9:00 pm

Hi all,

It's time to change my front tyres. I'm thinking of changing the whole set to no RF. The rear RF still got around 4mm but the front below 2.5 mm.

From what I read, the Michelin Latitude Sport 3 are a good candidate. any other recommendations?

I drive a X5 40D M Sport, tyre size: front: 255/50/19, rear: 285/45/19

Cheers

Are you thinking of keeping the RFs on the back and changing the front to non-RFs?

If so, BAD IDEA! Will make the car unstable and could affect warranty, insurance and all that other stuff. Thoroughly not recommended buddy.

General rule of thumb, same tyre type all round (RFs or non) and then same tyre make per axle.

No, I was thinking of changing all of them. but I read somewhere that it will be okay to drive with rear Rf and front non RF. What seems to be no okay is to mix the same axle front or rears.

But to be in the safe, I will change change all of them.

I have the Mich Lat sport 3 in 20's and they are great, as our E70 isn't the 7 seater I also bought the BMW space saver kit complete with jack.

I read somewhere that BMW assist wouldn't turn out to punctures if non Runflats were fitted. Don't know if that's true, worth checking out though.

They told me that they would not cover me for a puncture if I took the RFT off. Still took them off my 335i and the ride was so much better than with the stiffer side walls. I just carried a can of tyre gunk and compressor just in case.

[/quote]If thats the case I would ask them why BMW parts have just sold me the spare wheel for an E70 X5.

Wish  BMW  would forget Run flats, i've been stuck with them now for the last three X 5s, dont like them for ride, wear and cost reasons !!!  and to top the lot i hit a small pot hole and guess what my run flat went flat instantly and i was advised not to drive on it home, as i would damage my 20 " rim  ( replacement cost £ 420, ) and try getting the money of the local council after a Pot Hole Claim .!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
Run Flats  don't do the  ride any justice especially  with hard M sport suspension, which i prefer and i would rather BM put normal tyres on the X 5s  with  a  "get me home 165mm tyre under  the boot floor !! Please BM !!!
Can we start a  ban Run  Flat  tyre campaign ???

Change all four. With a mix, the sidewall stiffness difference is such that the esp has kittens when you turn corners.  I tried... http://xdrivers.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,9847.0.html
