Just spent
£335 on having the gearbox oil and filter plus transfer box oil changed


Twice today I've had gear slip

Is this a gearbox update needed or a different problem

I picked the x5 up with 100k on the clock
It's got a lifter tap and was told a oil change would sort it

So as I wasn't sure what oil had been used or when it was done I invested in the £700
Engine oil and filter change
All plugs changed
And gearbox and transfer box oil and filter changed

To make sure she was spot on

Still have the tapping noise
And now a slip on gears only twice but it's not something I know about as never had a auto let alone a v8 lol

What engine, gearbox, transfer box oil have You used?

First thing to do as soon as you can is get the car to either a BMW Dealership, or a Bosch Autocentre who has Autologic, or an Indy who can correctly read the ZF gearbox fault codes if there are any.  The codes stored should point at where the issue is that's causing slippage.

If you have gear slippage then don't leave it!  The bill just gets bigger!

All oils where done by a BMW specialist
Using BMW oil

I'm working nears Hayes isn't there a guy there that's on the site??
Same guy who does remap and performance parts ??

Gearbox slip will bring up a fault, usually covered by trans failsafe message.
are u sure its not just torque convertor slip?

Could be a small slug of air in the valve block that is working through.

What fluid have you used in it?
If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....

It was a BMW specialist garage so BMW oil

Doesn't say on bill what oil

No codes have come up on dash

you may need to get the egs updated as there is a parameter in there for oil age..
I haven't for the life of me found how to reset that one though and can only assume its part of the box calibration process?

Find an Autolgic BMW user and get it updated first.
If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....

Fair enough but they probably only reset the engine oil service side of it.
I believe from research that the only way you can reset gearbox oil parameters is to flash the EGS.
If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....

Be chiptune / Cpc engineering / Munich legends are all good bets and use autologic . If it's a gearbox specialist you need, there's Sussex auto repairs who are a ZF authorised distributor and repairer.

I think your gearbox is a ZF6HP26?

I know the ZF service kits are around £200-300. The BMW kit is ~£300. What kit did you use?

As there's a few thing

I've been told I have a sticky hydraulic tappet but it's load on start up and go's quiet still there but not as loud as start up

Reading on this site sounds more like vanos after hearing the same noises on YouTube

Metallic tapping noise on start could be the cam chain tensioner.  It uses spring pressure to apply tension to the chain initially, then oil pressure once it's built up.  I think Bmw increased the spring pressure as a mod.  I've just fitted a new Febi Bilstien one on mine (109k) and the noise has all but vanished. There's lots about it on US X5 forums, and if left can cause wear to the plastic guide blocks, worst case ending up in a chain replacement.
It costs about £40 for a new tensioner, and takes about 15mins to change.
