We've got the OE X5 comms pack head unit OBC. Recently developed a few different coloured pixels and lost all Bluetooth ability. Need some advice.
We've both got iphone 5's and need now to be able to connect phone and play music thru head unit. I'd like to stick with the OE unit as I don't want to lose the OBC function that's missing on some aftermarket units.
Problem is as I said holding the pairing button either on wheel or in armrest now doesn't work. Can Bluetooth just stop working? Any where I can send this unit to fix pixels / fix Bluetooth and maybe add connection for iphone music?
Or do I look at aftermarket units? Are there any that integrate OBC? Sorry for all the Q's!

Re: Head unit options
Bluetooth could just be a module failure. It's in the left side if the boot - silver module mounted at an angle - close to the Nav unit. Not sure if you can get repairs done. You can still get replacement modules, but they are expensive - think SIM free iPhone5S type cost! - from BMW.
It cannot stream music as that only came in with later versions of E70s onwards.
The OBC can be sent for repairs - there are a few on here who have had 'pixel fix' work done. Bluetooth would need upgrading to at least V3 or V4 for music and the E53 has V1.1, possible V2 on the later modules (14 were made for that car!!). Not heard of an 'upgraded' module.
After market system usually mean loss of the OBC, but some can do streaming I think.

Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.
Re: Head unit options
Obc functions can be kept on aftermarket units. You need to reroute the module (most examples are to glovebox).
This will retain all of the functions and you will be able to hook up any unit you want. Double din with blue tooth functions is the way I went. The newer pioneer app radio work with iPhone 5 as well as certain specific apps that will be bought up on screen including many sat nav apps which will work better than the original BMW one.
