Despite being entirely happy with my 4.4, i always have this horrible paranoia about the gearbox going on me. So have been thinking about warranty cover. Looked on line and it appears to be about £200 for my 2001 4.4. Does anyone on here have warranty cover and if so have they ever used it?
Is it just a big rip off that would not cover you if you don't have FSH, or not cover you if you have LPG etc..?

Warranty cover
Re: Warranty cover
I have Warranty Direct Luxury Car cover and it did pay out for a transmission rebuild in January. The policy is about £400, and I got an online quotation which I decided was too much so took no further. They rang me a few days later and gave me a good discount - standard tactics apparently!
Bearing in mind the cost of the transmission rebuild was over £3,000, the policy more than paid for itself. Had to use it again when the fuel pump relay packed in last week. Claim not yet settled but in progress. That repair bill is over £200. You do have to pay for diagnosis of the fault, but after that my limit of liability in terms of excess is £50.
Some garages will deal direct so you only pay the excess, but others require you to pay the whole bill and claim it back. I think if the car is recovered to one of their 'preferred' workshops it's all done for you. That was the case with the transmission, but not with the relay as we chose the workshop.
I only have to provide MoT details along with the date of the last service - which must be current and in accordance with the OEM recommendations.

Re: Warranty cover
I have cover with the AA - i struggled when looking for a warrenty initally as my car had over 100k miles (2002) - several companies would not touch it due to milage.
AA cover was very competitive - it worked out at a little over £500 for 2 years of cover paying via direct debit. The cover seems pretty comprehensive and would appear to cover most non consumable parts - they did have stipulations on certain fuel system parts on petrol cars though (mine is diesel). Can't remember the actual 'cover' name but it was Gold or Premium or something similar (probably just to make you feel better when forking out!)
Touch wood i have not had to use it yet.
I wanted a warrenty - parts for the X as we all know are expensive, though major failures not common they unfortunatly are not unheard of either! Peace of mind I suppose!
Service history - they requested a fully stamped Service book and current MOT- though service work does not have to be dealer - though they did say must be done by VAT registered garage (suppose to reduce chance of people doing own service work).
Touch wood i have not used yet - though did have to change my handbreak which i suppose i should have claimed for but it was not an expensive fix. I also wonder was my battery covered from reading someone elses post today.
There is lots of info on this forum on warrenties - pros and cons of many companies. Use the forum 'search' function and you will uncover lots more info.

Re: Warranty cover
Jay, I think AA warranty only cover upto 4.2 litre engine sizes but you might want to try them. Warranty Direct are probably your best option if you don't want to go with BMW themselves (well Modial is the provider).
I have BM warranty and although expensive is superb.
