The spare wheel is totalLy different style to the 5 spokes on the actual car. Is this usual? Are they space savers?? Or have my wheels been changed along the years?

Next step up from a space saver. All the E53's have them, they are 18" but with a higher profile tyre on them to be the same overall circumference. Not meant for anything more than occasional emergency use

Completely normal. Standard wheels such as 19" are too wide for the well that BMW put in.

And if you have the 20" offsets then you have 3 different wheels on the car!!!

Sorry I think mine was a 17" too.
Maybe 18" for the 4.8 as they have to clear the big brake kit
