Tyres - what's illegal when edges are worn
Tyres - what's illegal when edges are worn
So following from last post I've had the car a thousand miles and loving it. However after picking it up from berry heathrow bmw I've found a couple issues and have had little response in sorting them.
The rear vents, one of the direction adjusters is missing. Presumably kicked by a child...
The tyres - the fronts both sides are worn on the edges almost to the point they are bold. I've queried this with the salesman and bmw customer services but no luck so far.
That said the car is brilliant and the interior is exactly what I was hoping for. Driving it it is nice! Relaxing and calming place to be which is easy to navigate. Certainly pleased with performance and economy as well.
I'll attach photo from my phone in next post, I hope.

Here we go;
Re: Tyres - what's illegal when edges are worn
thats not illegal!!
Re: Tyres - what's illegal when edges are worn
it has to be three quarters of tyre width worn!
Re: Tyres - what's illegal when edges are worn
Hi I would get the tracking done , & check tyre pressures as it is a common problem on the X5 /6 but normally rear tyres have you checked the inside of them ?
Re: Tyres - what's illegal when edges are worn
Ok thanks good to know they arent illegal. But is it acceptable on an auc I suppose is the important question. This was a 36k car and I didnt think I would need to worry about tyre condition!
Re: Tyres - what's illegal when edges are worn
Are they 20s ?
It is just such a heavy car & Runflats are a bit unforgiving , but got mine tracked last year at stealers & the tyres have all warn even since cost £70 plus vat probably doubled now but try a good tyre centre !

Re: Tyres - what's illegal when edges are worn
I have just changed our tyres and they were alot more worn than yours.
From the MOT manual:- centre 3/4 of tyre not less than 1.6mm tread depth and round the entire outer circumference of the tyre.
Note:-each side of the central band of the tyre can be devoid of tread (ie bald) and still meet the pass as long as there is no exposed ply or cord.

Check the pressures, mine were wearing like that on the front, upped the pressure by 5psi and it stopped the wear dead.
The rears are another matter if you are on 20" wheels the negative camber likes eating the tyres.

Re: Tyres - what's illegal when edges are worn
Yes I've now checked the pressures and topped up, but more importantly is that ive just bought the car. Im not sure if this is acceptable wear on the tyres, or should they be replaced.
Thanks.
Thanks.
Re: Tyres - what's illegal when edges are worn
When I got mine it had one in that state but the rest of the tyre was 6mm or close. The dealer would not replace it for that as it was legal, but I have heard of some dealers changing tyres for abnormal wear. Think it depends on the dealer and the amount of wear.

Looks about average to me.

Re: Tyres - what's illegal when edges are worn
I have just fitted a new set of tyres to our X5 but before I did I had some of the rear camber taken out.
I used the Southampton wheel alignment centre and they usually set the rear camber on X5's at the lower end of the range that BMW spec.

Agree with X5Sport. Does look about normal......these are heavy cars and the tyre edges do wear quickly especially when chucked around roundabouts

Re: Tyres - what's illegal when edges are worn
I have just looked at my wheel alignment report and my rear neg camber was initialy set at -2deg08 and -2deg11, the max should of been -1deg35.
They are now set at -1deg30 and -1deg29.
I read a few posts on the Xoutpost forum regarding alignment/tyre wear and most people that had there rear neg camber set as close to the BMW lower spec of -1deg25 got much better wear out of the rears.
