a td4/ 320d question

so my sister has a td4 freelander which is the bmw engine 2005 model, anyway its started recently to be very hard (turning over alot) to start from cold and once it fires it smokes alot (white unburnt fuel smell) and runs a little lumpy, after say 20seconds all is well.

im looking up various things including that there is a foam filter breather on this engine same as the e53

Glow plugs bud I'd bet my mortgage on it. Check there's a feed to the plugs then check continuity to earth on each plug any open circuits and the plugs shot. TBF I'd change all 4 as there bound to be worn by now.
