Horn just stopped working

Post by cooa99 » Tue May 13, 2014 3:06 pm

Hi all,

My horn has stopped working.
Pressed in anger when I was about to give someone a piece of my mind on the M20. It did a short beep and then went silent.

The horn fuse in the glovebox is not blown.

I have already done a search and come across posts http://xdrivers.co.uk/forum/https://xdrivers.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8 and  http://xdrivers.co.uk/forum/https://xdrivers.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8

explaining how to take the steering wheel bit off.

Is there something else I can check prior to meddling with the steering to further narrow down the culprit

cheers

It might be the horn itself.

If you can, disconnect it and put a meter across the terminals and see if you get volts when the horn button is pressed.  At least you'll know which end to start at.

Agreed as above. However its most likely the connections @ the steering wheel.

Ok,

I was able to remove the horns from the engine bay.

As advised, I tested the cables with a multimeter for current when horn pressed ... and was getting 12v current so I guess that implies that its the horns that are faulty. BMW charge a fortune for theses things + they sell them separately!
