3.0D Remap ?

Post by lentil » Wed Jul 09, 2014 2:46 pm

Anyone here had their 3.0d remapped?

What is the general opinion of remapping these?

Mine has 122k on the clock. Would it be a silly idea?

I had my '05 3.0d re-mapped about 2 months after I bought it 6 years ago. It had 85,000 kms on it.

It already had a 'strong' engine before the re-map according to the guy that did it.

I had it on a rolling road about 3 years ago and it had 275 PS and 535 NM if I remember correctly.
Fuel consumption improved 1-2 MPG on shorter journeys and up to 8 MPG on motorway runs.

Before I had 25/27 MPG on the school/town run and 33/35 on m'way. Now I get 27/29 and I've had
44 on one journey over to UK, but the norm is 36/38.

It made the throttle response much quicker and of course you feel the power more, it's just nicer to
drive all round really.

It's now got 210,000 kms on the clock and it runs sweet as a nut. I made a preventory turbo change
last August, but that had NOTHING to do with the re-map.

Go for it, it really improves them, but make sure you have it done by a reputable shop.

Good luck

Mine has 130k on the clock...
& I fitted a plug in map device from E-Bay.... various settings, and delighted with it.
I'm regularly getting 580 miles a tank & it is pushed hard often, cruises lovely at 80 on the motorway for hours effortlessly.

The pullaway once rolling at 20mph is now amazing for a big vehicle and it's nice to have it there if you need it to get out of the way of something in a hurry.

Best £60 I ever spent... and I can modify what it does to suit my journeys in 2 minutes flat.

regards
Grant

Sounds good Grant.  Is it straight forward to set up?
Would you mind sending me a PM with the ebay link, and any tips please.

Thanks,
Greg.

Hi Greg,

I was surprised just how simple it was... and at £65 or thereabouts...
My X5 is the diesel 218hp sport version

Remove engine cover - - 1 minute..

Unplug Injector Rail control plug - - 10 seconds

Insert device connection fitted with waterproof pugs - - 10 seconds

Locate device & route wire harness neatly to not chaff or vibrate - - 2 minutes

Tie down device to lumpy thing next to washer bottle - - 20 seconds

Refit engine cover - - 1 minute

Test and enjoy extra power & economy - - ENDLESS

I looked at several of these devices on the Bay, and the best feedback came from an outfit called Tiger Tuning....  and it simply works, and if you don't like it or change the car, it removes easily.
The bit I like is that you can set it to suit your driving style, for long runs or zappy semi urban etc...

There are 8 settings to twiddle with in the box - they recommend setting 3 for power/economy, or higer for power... and how to learn that you just use more fuel/make black smoke for nothing.
I set to 4, for the extra grunt,
.....but if using setting 4 go easy on static pull-aways & low gear acceleration, as im sure you could damage the box if you abuse it too much.

A quick test on setting 5 turned a sedate 4x4 into a stupidly quick fools vehicle...

At setting 4, using the manual TipT' box setting, foot hard planted ...I get 0>60 in UNDER 7 seconds...
as soon as she gets into 2nd & 3rd the pull is simply ridiculous !!!
BUT
Understand, you don't get some thing for nothing..... Transmission & UJ wear will increase exponentially if you boot it like this every drive....

So, for me, the No 4 setting is there in-case I suddenly need power to move briefly..

I regularly get 550>650 a tank... 550+ with all motorway @ 85mph++.... 620/650 all motorway at a steady 70mph.... funnily enough I get about 550miles a tank doing town and lane driving too - without booting it...
and I always have a ton of crap in the boot too....

I found a few on ebay by typing X5 remap, no sign of Tiger Tuning though. When you have a minute would you mind putting the link up, if still available? Thanks.

Cheers Tim :) Found it.

Can anyone else please give their opinion on this type of remap? I just want to make sure its as good as paying someone £200 at a typical remapping company... Maybe this just do the same thing but coin in £130?

The more opinions on this the better please. I don't want to risk this if it will be in anyway unsafe for the car.

Thanks for any input.

You get what you pay for mate get a bespoke remap for your car (I'm not slagging OP off) you've  asked for others to give an opinion and I'm sure they will advise/reccomend Jason.

Cheers Reusch,

I've done a bit more digging and I think it makes more sense to go for a proper remap, tailored for my specific car. OK it may cost me another £150-200 on top, but it could end up saving me a potential disaster.
