BMW black ShadowLine trim

Post by kay323 » Thu Jul 03, 2014 3:33 pm

Hello

I have bought a Sapphire Black E70 X5 with the M Sport kit.  It has the chrome window trims which I don't really like.  I have been reading on the new what other people have done to de-chrome it and its either with plastidip spray or vinyl wrap.

The vinyl wrap seems a easier solution, wondering if anyone has it done?

Also, those who already have the factory trim can you tell me if it a matt or gloss finish ?

Kay if you go to all the trouble of taking it off to wrap it, why not jet get it sprayed. Will be easier when you come to fit it back on (as the film has a certain amount of thickness to it) which will make re-fit sometimes tricky. Plus you could get trouble later with the wrap peeling back in places.

Gloss black is the norm.

Thanks Sanj
I was not thinking of removing the trims but if they are easily removed and put back on then that is an option i will consider.  It will eventually be going to a bodyshop to get rid of some age related marks so will get a price to paint the window trim too.

Plastidip is easier than wrapping, although agree with sanj, if your gonna take it off better of painting it

Not on any thing of mine but I go to the states quite alot where it is very popular. Ive helped friends plastidip their wheels, front grills, interior trims - you name it. Its a very easy application and wouldnt require you to take the trim off.

One thing to note is its not very durable. In New York its great for the summer but comes off in the winter. Over in Cali they use it all year round.

I guess the beauty of it is the ease, you spend more time cleaning the trim than you do spraying it on. It comes off really easy as well if need be.

A few of the guys on the US forum have even plastidipped their whole X!

Yeah, have seen many plastidipi examples and does look easy.  I'm getting my windows tinted from a local wrapping and tinting company who say they have wrapped many chrome windows trims too without removing them so may give them a go and if it's no good then will remove trims and get them painted.

'Ipa' for those who may not have heard of it is Isopropyl Alcohol.  It's good stuff - not for drinking you understand.
