Service and gearbox service

Got this quote from a local bmw specialist, does this sound right??
Hi
Your transmission holds 9.5 ltrs but usually about 6ltrs will drain out, the rest is in the torque converter and valve block, The oil is £18.50+vat /ltr. We use Shell M 1375.4 which is the same as BMW fill the box with and the cost of changing would be £75+ vat.

I just wouldn't entertain it on the basis you can get Febi fluid which is the exact same thing just in a different bottle for £10....correct golden colour with the cat pee smell and Lifeguard 6.

Or even cheaper if you're willing is Millers DM which I have used twice in 6hp26 transmissions perfectly fine. Again it is 1375.4 spec. 5l for £20

Because there is alot of confusion around specs with customers and due to the nature of it being an automatic transmission, alot of businesses are taking advantage of just ripping off customers.

Re: Service and gearbox service
Is the shell one the correct spec even if it's expensive?? If he does a good job I don't mind if the oil is a bit more as long as it's the correct spec. He also said that I may want to do the filter sump gasket etc at extra cost and said that unfortunately there is no guarantee that when the oil is changed it wouldn't highlight other faults that are masked by the older more viscous oil, he said the decision is mine and wasn't pushy but said he would recommend it approaching 100k miles

Re: Service and gearbox service
Jeesh, what kind of moron is trying to change the fluid in a transmission and not even dropping the sump to change the filter.
But yes that spec is correct but I am a little suspicious.
You can't get hold of the Shell fluid in a Shell bottle.
So is he using 1375.4 specification fluid like the Febi one or is he getting the fluid from BMW?
If he is getting 1375.4 spec fluid then it could be anything like the Millers one which is fine but charging the £18 premium is a scam.
Honestly if you are happy to pay a premium then buy the fluid yourself from the dealer and tell him to crack on.
( You aren't going to get any higher quality than the Febi fluid I linked, only a higher price for the same thing )

Re: Service and gearbox service
Maybe I'll just tell him I'll buy the fluid and he can do the job and hope he doesn't keep my fluid and use his!! Lol

Re: Service and gearbox service
I would really consider using someone else.
1. You don't trust him 100%
2. I don't trust him 100%, who offers to service a transmission but doesn't drop the pan, check for debris and change the filter

Re: Service and gearbox service
I only trust myself 100% but I've never really tackled
Car things. Fitted kitchens boilers, electrical installation but cars for some reason (we'll the thought of messing something big time on a bmw scares me)

Re: Service and gearbox service
Without a lift and the correct equipment to back you up you can really screw yourself up.
On paper it's an easy job but it's when you're on the last pan bolt and it shears leaving the thread inside the transmission.
It's when things don't go right you really get screwed up DIYing.

Re: Service and gearbox service
Yeah having the right gear for the job is half the battle together with a bit of car maintenance experience sterling services in Stockton in tees have been recommended so I'll maybe give them a call

Re: Service and gearbox service
Depends.
If all genuine parts then that's great.
If it's a Meyle filter worth £20 and Shell spec oil worth £40 then it's a rip off!

Re: Service and gearbox service
Might be a better idea to get a warranty direct warranty as touch wood the gearbox is okay for now
