Service and gearbox service
Re: Service and gearbox service
I'm not keen on an independent advertising they use Carlube ATF-U.
No doubt they use it as their LT71141 substitute.

Once again this has cropped up, do I don't I ,mines nearly at 90,000 04 plate.

Do it buddy, won't regret it. Know Jason does it - May not be ideal location wise though. Mine was done at 35k cos of a leaky gasket and if I have it long enough I'll get one done at 95k, on 59k now.

Im a great believer in getting the gearbox serviced! If your car has done over 60.000 miles get the gearbox serviced! Anything that has moving parts and takes oil, the oil does need changing!
[/quote]
My X is about 130k miles. I bought when it was about 53k miles so most of the mileage was 120miles motorway daily trip to work. After spending so much in fuel, I bought a golf MKIV to do the motorway miles and relegated the X5 to to weekends use from about 3yrs ago.
Any recommendations for somewhere down south (.. SE london/Kent) to take for servicing?
cheers

I got my gearbox serviced at the Automatic Gearbox Centre in Hove (Brighton)

Hook up. I'm only 25 mins from the ugly gits. Let me know when you go and if work dictates I'll pop over.

Re: Service and gearbox service
I have seen alot of Meyle and Febi filters being used on the 6 speeds.
Never seen an issue with any of the ones I have seen.
The plastic sump ones also appear to be perfectly identical to the Filtran ones.

Re: Service and gearbox service
Got this quote from a local bmw specialist, does this sound right??
Hi
Your transmission holds 9.5 ltrs but usually about 6ltrs will drain out, the rest is in the torque converter and valve block, The oil is £18.50+vat /ltr. We use Shell M 1375.4 which is the same as BMW fill the box with and the cost of changing would be £75+ vat.

Re: Service and gearbox service
This is what I was talking about in another thread. http://xdrivers.co.uk/forum/index.php/t ... 19.60.html
Everybody seems to state that they use a different fluid from everyone else. So there is no clear cut answer on what is right and what is wrong and very little confidence that the correct fluid is actually being used by any one "specialist".

BMW X5 3.0d M-Sport facelift (E53).
Re: Service and gearbox service
The confusion happens when people mix up the correct fluid with the original fluid.
Correct fluid falls anything within 1375.4, so Millers, Febi, Meyle etc etc.
Original fluid is a blanket LG6 fluid ZF branded and nothing else.
Independents will use something like Millers which is the correct fluid but not the original fluid. Then people will go on a forum going, my indy is trying to use the wrong fluid!
And this is where the confusion starts.
