Upper tailgate latch bump-stop.....

Post by RoShamBo » Fri Jun 13, 2014 9:07 am

Been investigating an annoying rattle from the tailgate and noticed that the rubber stoppers are missing from both sides of the upper latch.

Not spoken to a dealer but only 1 available on Ebay :

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/BMW-E53-Boot ... 1128500829

£ 25 is a lot for a tiny piece of plastic - and I may just have to order it - but wondered if anyone has any ideas for a DIY fix ?

I am rubbish at stuff like this - any suggestions welcome !

Or if there is a BMW breakers in Surrey anyone knows ?

Cheers for any help guys.

Breakers might be a possibility but these buggers always seem to be missing or breaking up. You'll probably have to bite the bullet and buy new.

So....I went to Homebase and found these :

And used superglue to stick them in place :

And bingo, knocking has gone. Total cost...£ 1.75

So there are supposed to be rubber bump stops on top of the latch bolts? So that you would have to remove the bump stops in order to undo the latch bolts?Image

They use those bolts to screw into place. They have a hole in them so you can get a screwdriver through to the torq head.

Ok thanks. So mine are missing too. Might explain the noise even though I have the sprung loaded bump stops in the sides of the tailgate frame of the main chassis.

Holy Thread Revival!  :))

Are there meant to be two bump stops then? One either side of the latch?

I've always had just the one (LHS as you face open upper tailgate), which I replaced a few years back as it had failed (split). Just noticed it's split again as tailgate closes itself again almost immediately (watch those finger tips!).

A pair would make sense to pop the tailgate nice and high away from the latch, but thought I'd check as realOEM states you just required one, and the fact that a stealer wants just shy of £15 each for them!  ::)

TIA

Mine has had a rattle from the back for ages. I've had everything out of the boot, taped or tied everything down and still it rattles. I wonder if it's those two grommets either side of the latch as low and behold, mine are absent...

Exactly the same here, it's been driving me mad. Mrs thinks I have lost the plot, had everything out of the boot, shut the boot door, trying to wiggle and nothing. Just looked and I have one of these gromets missing.

Guessing these are dealer only parts?

Well, today I just stuck some 1cm square pieces of dense foam - like thick neoprene- on top of the latch bolts and hey presto, no rattle. The problem is, it's highlighted all the other noises I didn't hear before..

I have asked Cotswold Bmw for a quote, it appears that the rubber bump stop isn't available on its own. They have ordered the bolt to see if the rubber is included
