Gutted, Bloody hidden rust!!!

Post by Zakbelle » Sat Jun 07, 2014 7:59 pm

Hi just bought my new X5 but came across rust totally by accident when checking the car thoroughly yesterday and didn't spot it during the time I was buying it (grr) currently trying to get bmw to sort it under the warranty as it's on an 06 Le Mans sport 3.0d so comes under the 12 yr warranty. Body shop man reckons the boot lid has been sprayed externally die to the paint thickness readings of 180 microns although he admits it didn't look like it??? Also told me that the car has had smart repairs to drivers door and bumper at some point which kinda took the shine off the new car as I was told it was truly genuine had BMWFSH and bought from a BMW employee!! Oh well guess no one is completely honest nowadays.

Anyone else had corrosion on the lower boot lid inside? Or even checked this area?? Bmw body shop man was talking about replacing the whole lower boot lid but wasn't sure if the warranty would cover it

Yeah I wasn't that concerned apart from I didn't want it to spread to the bottom lip giving me a problem of needing a new lower tail gate, if bmw say no to the repair I'm just gonna spray it with some rust treatment to slow the spread

Ive got this issue on mine, 52 plate 3.0D sport, mine is much worse than yours, ive got bubbling paint on the lower edge of the tailgate now, looks terrible.

I'd be interested to see what BMW say about it, let us know how you get on with them.

John I think yrs is out of the 12 year warranty but basically he went all over the car checking the paint thickness saying it had had a repair on panels that weren't even remotely near the boot lid?? I'm not holding much hope as he didn't seem particularly interested or give me any confidence that he would try to get it repaired by warranty. I am more pissed off because the car has FBMWSH and has had a body inspection in March 2013 but apparently the body work isn't checked at this inspection?? Just wheels, frame, undercar etc

Been looking at breakers yard tailgates for future reference and there are plenty of them about for circa £100 so not the end of the world

For most people, I think a Full BMW service history would mean all the mechanical servicing , ie fully stamped service book. smart repairs on. Small dings and bumper scrapes on an  8 or 9 year old car are not something I would expect a main dealer to do unless I had money to waste........ That area under the tailgate is apparently well known for rust starting in older cars.  Hope you get it all sorted to your liking though.

Don't get me wrong it's not something I would take to a main dealer unless the warranty covered it, more surprised to see rust, thought it was something that hit cars of a different decade, I've had older than this and not a spot of rust, this include French cars. Maybe it is due to poor repair, more mad at myself for not seeing it as I checked the upper tailgate

bmw of that era all rust !!! look at e39's, covered in rust, e46's and e46 m3's, the front arches and rear arches both go!!! its poor show, older cheaper french cars and vauxhalls of same era don't do it

When my brother in law was looking for a golf r32 ,he didn't find a single one that wasn't rusty on the front arches. Vw know about the problem and would repair them under warranty.  Not good for a car that came out in 2005! I'm gonna go and check my tailgate now lol.

Another sweeping generic statement!  My 2005 E46 is rust free!  No bubbling or other signs of problems with the paintwork in or out of the wheel arches.  It depends upon where they are kept and how they are maintained.  Some cars kept close to the coast will rust because of the salt air, others because they aren't maintained.

All my cars are kept clean (including door shuts etc) and kept waxed and that makes a big difference.  Undersides are washed too, as are the usual mud/water traps and as soon as the salt spreading stops I always clean the whole car.

Could be as simple as the steel not being cleaned correctly before painting?  Or the cleaning solution is approaching the refresh point?  Who knows, it's just one of those weird things that can affect even what should be the simplest processes.... :(
