Re: Intermittent not cranking bmw x5
Thanks all, they couldn't see any faults anywhere so have reset the EW something? So hopefully that will work, they've charged me so if it doesn't I'll be straight back down there. My gut feeling is it's the thing inside the transmission as mentioned here.. but fingers crossed
Re: Intermittent not cranking bmw x5
Will you keep throwing money at parts and stuff if I keep making suggestions ?
It may well be the transmission inhibitor causing the issue as you suspect and as others suggest .
One other cause I can think of is the battery safety terminal .Worth digging around the internet for info before spending money .

It's been 5 days this this EWS reload... and it HASN'T played up YET.. could this be the fix? I'm dreading it not starting now as I'm just beginning to gain a tiny amount of confidence that it's fixed :xmaskiss:

I have just started experiencing this issue, has anyone got to the bottom of the cause and a possible solution yet?

Mine is still fine, but I am honestly not sure what the garage did. They said they couldn't find a fault so reset the EWS for the fun of it, and like a miracle it worked. I personally think they knocked something in the autobox when changing the oil.
Monty, next time it does it, see if you can wire the starter with ignition on in Park and see if it cranks.

Re: Intermittent not cranking bmw x5
Mines failed today, got in it, drove a quarter of a mile down the road to the petrol station from a job I was on to get a drink and a sandwhich. Got back in the car, and nothing. Kept trying. Left it for 5-10 minutes still nothing.
Checked the volts, 12.3V. Got someone to help me jump start it anyway just to rule out low power, no change.
Called banks breakdown insurance. Guy came out, plugged in, no fault codes, all actuators reset and checked through on his snap on odb unit. He decided it was either gearbox position sensor or starter motor, mainly starter motor. Towed me to a garage of my choice. Left it at the garage tonight, the chaps an old X5 owner so will hopfully be familiar and bottom it.
Will keep you all updated, he has ordered a starter motor on the wordd from breakdown guy but has told me if that is not faulty he will send the replacement back. Waiting now...

Re: Intermittent not cranking bmw x5
Just an update on previous post. I had only had this car a week and a day at the time of failure.
So was starting to wonder what I had got myself in to as it's a repossession auction vehicle.
Turns out previous owner has had brand new starter motor fitted, and someone had left loose connections,
All working fine now. Contacts cleaned up and tightened up to a proper torque setting, mus have been left finger tight and maybe the previous garage forgot to tighten.
All happy and smiling again now,
