Re: MPG low & Autobox
Just a quick update on this; The temperature of the car was a little low, I'll get that looked at when it goes in next. I did the reset too, that made a difference. There is some conflicting opinions on what that reset actually does (throttle reset or gearbox, I'm not sure which) but there is a ...

MPG low & Autobox
Morning chaps, I know that this topic has been done to death but I'm really starting to lose my rag with the car now. I do approx 100 miles a week in my car at a cost of £30 for fuel. The MPG very rarely gets above 22mpg when not driving on the motorway. On the motorway it creeps up to about mid 20' ...

Re: How smelly are X5's?
I can't say that I have ever noticed any diesel smells at all in or out of the cabin. I've never even noticed the exhaust to be honest.
I'd say that rather than get used to it I'd find out the source of the diesel smell...

Re: NEWBIE with X5 e70 3.0d possible tranny problems and timing chain advice
Are you sure that the whining noise that you are hearing isn't the whistling sound of the turbo?
As for the timing chain noise...I'm not sure about this one. The sound of my engine changes when I switch the aircon on (the noise of the compressor running). Could this be what you are hearing?

Cheers for the pictures!
I'm sold on this now after seeing that. I think there's a body shop near me that would be able to wrap. I'll get some quotes and post up some pictures once it's done.

Cheers for the replies.
The more I look into this the more I think wrapping it would be better - plus I can always take it off if. Plus, I'm guessing it can be wrapped in situ.

Blacking out chrome window trim
Hi All,
Has anybody blacked out their chrome window trim? I'd be interested in this, I'm not a big fan of the chrome, but unsure of the best way to do it (paint, vinyl....etc).
Any pointers or before/after pics would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Tom

New rear ball joints
Just picked up my car from BMW, who carried out a free health check while the car was in. They advised me that I need the 3 ball joints on my near-side rear replacing due to excessive play. The car passed it's MOT just 2000 miles ago so I doubt it'll need doing right away. However, BMW have quoted ...

Re: Loud screech from rear wheels when unlocking
This is the third actuator to fail on my car in 11 months and, although replacing it under warranty, the cost of the repair to me would have been £1200 (at Cooper BMW in Reading). They had a look at the whole system to see if there were any obvious issues causing the premature failures but couldn't ...

Re: Loud screech from rear wheels when unlocking
Quick update for X5_twin I had my rear brake replaced (pads, discs & shoes) as they were well shot. I was told initially that the worn shoes could well have seized and the noise I heard was the actuator trying to free them. I was banking on this being the case..... However, the garage were unable to ...

Re: Loud screech from rear wheels when unlocking
Ouch! That's a hell of a lot of money, but reading other posts it sounds about right. Mine is going in tomorrow but I'm really hoping that it's not the actuator. I spoke to my local Indy today who said that it could well be worn rear brakes.
I'll report back tomorrow night with their findings!

Re: 'Parking brake failure' - Car (no longer) stranded. **updated**
I suspect that the actuator may be OK. Having read other forums, it appears that there could be an issue with software that can cause this failure with a software update being the fix.
Has anybody heard of this?

Re: 'Parking brake failure' - Car (no longer) stranded. **updated**
I think I might have the same problem here. I haven't had my car long, only purchased in January this year. However, having looked at my paperwork I can see that BMW had replaced the "handbrake control unit and actuator assembly along with air Spring" back in May last year. The car has only done 4K ...
