Wow Fantastic work!!
Just a quick update on mine, as i mentioned the other week i was going to drop the sump again after a 100 or so miles,
Well i did on Thursday 200ish miles later so glad i did as i found more bits lurking on the bottom plate all cleaned out all sealed up again, so yes its a good ...

turned the cam back and it stayed there so all was good,
got it all put back together today and fired up runs so sweet now,
new cam chain new water pump, new crank seal, and loads of cleaning going to drop the oil again and change filter pull the sump off an have another look for debris ...

Hello doing the same job here on a 4.4 tho, my question is when i have it all timed up [correct tools] when i remove the rear locking block on 1-4 the inlet cam moves a little 5-8 doesnt, i still have continuity on the pins also when turning it the inlet cam doesnt seem to turn as much, havent ...

Had same problem last year checked all fuses, code read nothing came up, ordered new key from BMW now alls working as should be, and the keys are only £138 :-[

Also try unplugging the temp sensor bottom left on rad hose that should bring fan on,

i know this is an old post and dont know if youve got it sorted but have you tried the inhibitor switch? its on the side of gearbox, if you google will give you all the info, it brings BMW fault code 60,

you can check voltage with the hidden features on your dash!!! will give you battery volts and charging volts its test number 9

Another update
Car is fantastic was a bit dubious when first got it after reading all the problems you get with them but no real problems now just every now and then get engine check light on which is for the o2 sensor bank 1 sensor 1, i know i need to do it but no real rush,
Went to BMW other day ...

Checked every connector changed temp switch made sure it would spin freely connected to scanner done a check and alls working :) could actually get the fan to spin via scanner,
I knew it was working through the other things I'd done , not sure what It actually was but probably a bit of all, could ...

After a just over a month of ownership I've finally got the X5 to how I like! It's the little things which annoy me so they had to be done,
MID pixels fixed, passenger door window (sticking when all the way down) fixed £7 , PDC sensor £9 eBay, headlight washers new pump £19 eBay ,driver door carrier ...

I had this when I changed a door handle carrier, it's like you said the cleats wear and don't hold handle...
The little bodge was to drill a hole in the plastic and put a self tapper screw and washer and tighten to door carrier, you can get to it easy with door card and airbag out,

Try listening to each sensor I used a piece of tube if you hear a clicking it's ok if you hear nothing it's broke or connections no good,
You need ignition on and in reverse gear, you can get them off eBay for about a tenner each ,

Left hand side at the bottom on the thin AC pipe 3 thin wires, disconnect put AC on with engine running and see if comes on !!!
Mine did must be a relay hidden somewhere I think cus I'm sure they are slow an fast running fans,
