Re: Time to change? What would you do?
Got a call yesterday -mechanic (yes, a real, old style proper one, not a parts fitter) was under the car when he phoned - he said he could see no corrosion at all on the rear pipes and the suspension arms seemed to be in good order as well (asked him to look while he was there ...

Re: Gear box issues?
For what it's worth I believe several Car manufacturers not just BMW now quote gearboxes as "sealed for life" and this is at the root of the problem. We routinely change engine oil even brake fluids and coolant yet a gearbox manual or automatic gets ignored unless it's broken or ...

My daughter explained how the pdc and Reverse camera work on my X5 apparently there is a "thud" sound when your to close!!!
Yes I sometimes use this method too. The actual PDC seems to be more hassle than it is worth.

Re: Gear box issues?
Research seems to show quite a of X5s with gearbox issues which is quite shocking for a prestige brand really.
I've driven 20 year old 200k cars (on original autoboxes) that are smoother than the X5.

Re: Time to change? What would you do?
I agree with regards to the fixing the car for someone else mentality its crazy but then I find thats what gets you into the trap of keeping it, as before you know it something else has gone wrong. The next door neighbour has just bought a C1 (tiny car) on £99 a month PCP and it ...

Re: Gear box issues?
Yeah it does the cold 'thud' thing from 1st to 2nd. Then by what others have said I think it has 'the lurch' too. Generally gear changes are smoother when fully up to temperature BUT still not as smooth as other auto cars I've driven (though I've not driven another X5 auto I have driven a 5 series ...

Re: Time to change? What would you do?
Warranty companies always use 'wear and tear' as a get out clause.... but I do have some sympathy with that argument on a higher mileage 11 year old car. As nice as these E53s are they are total money pits. Not only is there so much to go wrong but it all costs an absolute bomb to fix it when ...

Gear box issues?
First thing in the morning pulling away the car will kind of 'clunk' into gear with quite a noticeable thud, but this only happens once? In general the gear shifts are not that smooth and sometimes it feels like it is hanging onto a gear too long and is waiting too long to change up or down. All ...

Does sound like a ball joint or bush tbh. There are 2 control arms each side and so would check there first.

Yeah it is the ball joints, not a big job at least.

Re: newbie x5 facelift 4.4/4.8 purchasing and fault code reading
Of course I did buy mine last year so it is probably worth about 50 pence now as all cars depreciate..... I'm sure you can get a decent one for 6k, but my belief is all used cars will have some kind of issue crop up sooner or later and on an X5 the parts / labour isn't cheap. Tyres £150 a corner, ...

Re: tyre opinions please
As I said earlier, I've had those very Hankook's, was more than happy with them. Only replaced as they got worn due to alignment issues (and its an X5 after all). Would fit them again when I'm happy it's not going to eat another pair of rears lol.
What are they like ...

Re: tyre opinions please
Mine has mismatched budget tyres on it put on by the previous owner - I do such low mileage that I haven't replaced them yet but I plan to soon. Being a heavy car I tend not to drive it hard anyway..... but yeah budget tyres are pretty dire and it is quite easy to induce under steer in the wet and ...

Creaking front suspension
3.0d if that makes any difference? Anyway the front is making a squeaking / creaking noise and sometimes a bit of a clunk when driving, often noticeable when turning the wheel around corners or over speed bumps and so on. The noise, or at least a very similar one, can be replicated by bouncing up ...

Re: windscreen washer jets not working properly
This sounds like a lot of faffing around.............. hoping it will be a simple home fix to clean the filters and pipes?
Going to have to get it done soon one way or another.
