If it's not a 7 seater, lift up the rear luggage compartment.  If there's a horses head in it steer well clear.

I 'think' my 2011 x5 does, but will have to check.    Mind you, the size of the mirrors are so big you probably won't notice.

This going to sound lame, but how difficult / easy is it to remove the license plate? My x5 has the black frames with the plate mounted without screws in it.

Has the plate been stuck down or is there a special knack to getting them off? I can't see anything useful on google from the ...
